IAGA Contemporary Art Gallery is pleased to announce Subterranea. An Urban Cartography, a solo exhibition by Liviu Bulea, on view from February 12 to March 21, 2026. Curated by Georgeta-Olimpia Bera, the exhibition presents an introspective exploration of the urban environment as a complex, layered territory shaped by memory, perception, and psychological tension.

Liviu Bulea: Subterranea. An Urban Cartography explores the city as a layered physical and psychological space shaped by memory, perception, and subconscious experience. The exhibition investigates how urban structures influence inner states, revealing tensions between openness and confinement, expansion and claustrophobia, presence and alienation.

Through a process of construction and deconstruction, Bulea examines the evolving relationship between the individual and the built environment. Photography, Polaroids, cyanotypes, and mixed-media elements are used to transform monumental architecture into malleable visual material, challenging the idea of reality as fixed or immutable.

Rooted at the intersection of personal history and territorial exploration, the works map traces of transit, time, and spatial transformation. Grayscale compositions, sharp framings, vivid chromatic accents, and textural interventions generate a dynamic visual dialogue that reflects urban change and psychological dissonance.

Subterranea ultimately proposes an interiorized cartography of belonging, where collective memory and personal experience converge in an introspective reflection on contemporary urban life.
